YouTube is getting ready to roll out some new features for its Videos tab, which should make for slightly better search and navigation of the site. Video categories will soon be found under the Videos tab, and new categories will also be added. These new categories include Education, Nonprofits & Activism, and Science & Technology.

Additionally, HowTo & DIY and HowTo & Style have been renamed, so you can see the difference between how-tos for home life, decorating, fashion and beauty. Lastly, drop down menus have been added for a better transition for clicking through popular video searches. What’s important about these types of tweaks for a monolith like YouTube is that the video-sharing site has become too much of a dumping ground, meaning that so many people add content to the site, that it’s difficult to sift through.

That’s why so many services like DailyTube and uVouch have popped up in the past year, so the organization of YouTube’s longtail can be better achieved and more importantly, better accessed. These new organization features for the Videos tab also look to better compete with the cropping of niche video sites that have taken off in recent months as well.

Yeah...I wonder if the categories will be populated with the current most viewed videos. I wonder if YouTube will ever experiment with scheduling for regularly repeated shows...some services seem to be having success with mimicking traditional television tools.

Ponder this for a second: If you were lucky enough to get your vids in those new categories right when they launch, they're bound to get some serious views.
