Just as I was about to hit the sack for the night, more gPhone rumors surfaced. This comes from F. Colton, the editor over at India Street, and a fellow who tends to do his research fairly well, in my experience. He reports this morning that Chinese mobile handset manufacturer e28 is going to be a gPhone handset manufacturer.
He also mentions that he hasn’t so far been able to confirm that the manufacturer will have the exclusive rights to manufacture the phone, but based on what we know about the gPhone project (and their relationships with LG and HTC), my guess is probably not.
The manufacturer’s website preaches of e28’s beliefs in “mobile Linux convergence technology,” a philosophy that sounds just the right amount of “do no evil” to mesh with Google’s guiding philosophies on mobile computing.
There are a number of images of various smart-phone littered around the e28 website, all of which look similar in form factor to the HTC offerings that have also been rumored to be hardware platforms for the gPhone.
On the scale of credibility for gPhone rumors, I’d put this one at about a six or seven. It sounds right, but at the end of the day, it’s still a rumor.
