Sneak Peek: Seekler Alpha - Rmail

Seekler is an upcoming list creation site that looks to become a resource for opinions, through the creation of organized clusters of information (or lists). We first mentioned it here, but I’ve gotten a chance to see what Seekler has done since then, and really go through the site during this private alpha test phase.

The set up of the site overall is rather pragmatic, and very structured. This makes it pretty easy to search and find information, as well as view lists that users have created. And making your own list is easy enough. Pick a topic and run with it. While viewing others’ lists, you’ll see that there are community lists, and individual lists.

Multiple users contribute to a community list, which provides a kind of aggregate of data that’s been shared on Seekler. These also have wiki functionality, so you can expound on any item within the list. The actual editor for doing so is rather basic, which explains the simplicity of the Seekler site overall. You can’t modify text, or add images or links, so the result is a very plain wiki that offers up information on a list’s items.

It’s also very easy to browse the site. For each list you can see who has a community list, and likewise, you can visit their profile of sorts, which lets you see all of their lists. For further searching within a list, you can enter a term, and filter down through the list. This is a helpful tool that can aid in really pulling out specific data you may be looking for.

Another good feature that lends to the site’s design is the fact that most of the activity on the site occurs on the right hand side of the page, including a user’s collection of lists, and details on a list item. This allows the focus of the site to remain on the actual list. Additionally, the majority of actions you can take for participating in Seekler are easily accessible on every single page.

What’s missing though is the focus on the opinions behind each list that’s created. Yes, you can search an existing list, but adding a list description, or showing a preview of each item could offer more immediate information for users. Otherwise it’s just not entirely clear that Seekler is meant to be used as a way of sharing information, as opposed to simply creating “top 10″ lists.
