Google Finance announced two new features that will likely do well to raise their profile a little bit - a finance tab for iGoogle and a gadget API for market data.

Perhaps it is just me, or perhaps it’s just that old habits die hard (or it could be that I tend not to use many market-based finance tools in the natural course of my workday), but I’ve typically used Yahoo! for most of my financial search needs. However, the new suite of dashboard gadgets for iGoogle could change that for many folks, as they are not only handy in what is many people’s start page in their browser, but also elsewhere as the gadgets have been designed to “talk” to each other. According to Matt Gundersen, Google Finance Engineer, “when you make an update in one gadget, it automatically syncs with the other gadgets in the tab.”

The API might prove to be similarly engaging and useful for market-centric developers, as it interfaces with stock market information for NAQDAQ, NYSE and American stock exchanges. Google claims this to be the first free gadget API for market data developers, and I can’t readily find a free competitor to contradict the claim.

While the API for market data may seem insignificant now, this move could be viewed as important in the future. The amount of IT devoted to finance is increasing at a rate higher than that of the computer industry (as platforms emerge and need business men to monetize :) Google opening the floodgates invigorates a larger class of financially minded programmers.
