GMail Phasing In IMAP - Rmail

Now here’s a bit of interesting news out of the Mountain View giant: Google appears to be in the middle of phased roll-outs of IMAP capabilities in GMail. The help system to GMail confirms the existence of at least planned IMAP support, although none of our GMail accounts seem to have the magical IMAP service turned on yet.

IMAP integration really gives GMail a leg up over the other competition, allowing a lot of advanced features in email clients like Outlook and Thunderbird to be utilized (like selective attachment downloads, and synchronized email between system client and web client as opposed to mirroring).

To check if you have won the GMail IMAP lottery, click on your settings in GMail, then click on ‘Forwarding and POP IMAP’ tab. A trick that did not work for us but seems to for some is logging out of GMail and logging back in.

Give it a shot. If it works, might want to stop by the corner store in the morning and buy a scratch-off.

Over at Cybernet I just read that the author simply logged out and then back in, and that way got the IMAP section visible. Mine was there on first look though - really great to finally use IMAP with GMail!

Looks like Google didn't want the cat let out of the bag just yet. The link to "planned IMAP support" page yields: We're sorry, but the information you've requested cannot be found. Still sounds exciting though.
