EditGrid’s online spreadsheet service has launched a helpful new plugin for your Microsoft Excel application. Called EditGrid Excel Plus, this integrates the web-based app with your desktop app in order to provide streaming data to Excel in real time. This is helpful because the majority of people that make spreadsheets are familiar with, and heavily use Excel.
As most web-based apps like Google Spreadsheet and others, are still building out the functionality of their online services, Excel still has all the features that power users need. With this plugin, you get the best of both online and offline worlds, at the same time. Data from your online EditGrid spreadsheet is reflected immediately on your Excel sheet. This works somewhat in reverse, but the easiest way to update your EditGrid spreadsheet from Excel is to do a manual refresh. The automatic submissions from Excel to online apps is slow and a bit spotty at times.
As there are several levels of integration, the whole of the integration is rather seamless–it takes no time to load sheets from EditGrid to Excel, and you can work offline if need be and update at a later time. In other news, EditGrid recently added an iPhone-optimized service, and Microsoft is moving towards its Live Workspace as well.
User comment: By: Cameron ChapmanHopefully they'll come out with one for Open Office or another non-Microsoft program as well. I'm thinking that a lot of Mac users probably don't have Excel, so Open Office or another plugin in addition to the existing one would probably be a good move.
