Automattic, makers of the WordPress blogging platform, has acquired Gravatar, who offers a tool for taking your avatar with you from blog to blog.
According to a post from Automattic founder Matt Mullenweg, the acquisition will help Gravatar better scale. The service already been moved over to WordPress servers, where it is reportedly running more than 3x as fast. Additionally, Automattic will move all avatars that have been uploaded to WordPress.com and make them available through Gravatar.
Automattic plans to make all of Gravatar's premium features free, and refund anyone who has purchased them in the last 60 days.
