While NBC proper has decided to move away from socially distributed media with Hulu, NBC subsidiary Telemundo makes a step in the right direction. Telemundo last week began offering full-length episodes of all its prime-time series and novelas on Yahoo Telemundo.
Coming hot on the heels of what was presumably a successful trial run with Yahoo with the two shows Mosaico Hispano and Battle of the Bands, Telemundo now offers the shows one day after their network TV airing. Also available via the site are extra footage features, as well as some social features by way of Yahoo! Groups.
It’s interesting that this subsidiary of NBC seems to have a better grasp on what the internet public wants in terms of multimedia availability and community. Hulu is clearly at least three or four steps backwards in terms of creating community and social graphs for fans of popular shows on the NBC networks. Hulu also widely limits distribution of the programming, taking it away from largest media ponds on the Internet.
Telemundo’s slow march into new media hasn’t been widely documented by the English-speaking press. One wonders if the digital agenda-setters at NBC-Universal are aware of what crazy ideas are being floated at Telemundo.
