SheKnows, a network of online properties geared towards the female demographic, has acquired Soaps.com. The soap opera site that touts 600,000 uniques per month, and will offer more content for the growing network, which already covers topics such as health, parenting, entertainment and food. SheKnows is not only looking to expand its user base, but is looking to distinguish itself from other women-related networks, like Glam. It’s doing so by owning and managing most of its sub-properties.

Is that the better tactic? I suppose it depends on what your end goals are. For Glam and SheKnows, ad distribution is very important, but Glam maximizes its outreach without needing to own all of the sites on which its ads are sent out to. The same goes for content that’s accessible through the distributed network. Nevertheless, branding seems ultimately important for SheKnows, and in owning the majority of the content providers within its network, it retains control over all aspects of content and ad distribution.

In other news, Glam has teamed up with Lifetime to build up its Managed Vertical Network.

What a day for women in technology! SheKnows business model seems a little more difficult to monitor than Glam's. As a provider for the networks using their material, Glam functions similar to FM in the technology world. Real Estate first, content second...let experts cover material and then help them monetize the content through premier, heavily trafficked destinations.
