This is such an ongoing issue that I’m not even sure what to say at this point, but here goes. Your boss doesn’t like it when you fart around on MySpace (unless your boss happens to be Pete Cashmore). And all that unwanted farting around goes for Facebook, too. Just less so than for MySpace.

A recent study from web security firm Barracuda Networks has polled 2,400 of its customers to see where all this blocking is going down. 43.9% of companies block MySpace, while only 25.6% block Facebook. Does that surprise any of you, or are you simply wondering what kind of companies these are that have employees that aren’t clued into Facebook?

Barracuda attributes this difference in apparent attitudes towards the two separate networks as many companies simply never having heard of Facebook. I’d like to see what other social networks were included in this poll, and what sites are being blocked in general by Barracuda’s clientele.

No matter which way you slice it, try not to fart around in ways that can be traced (and subsequently blocked) by your boss. Chatting at the water cooler about this week’s episode of Heroes always seems to fly.

I don't find it that surprising for some reason. I work as a Sys Admin for a medical company and we ended up blocking MySpace but have not done the same for Facebook. We use a Barrcuda to monitor and block traffic by the way... After talking to several of the younger females at my office (300 women...3 guys) most of them feel that Facebook is more for college kids so they don't even bother opening up an account, but they all have MySpace... I don't think it's so much that people don't know about FB..it's more that they just don't think it is for them...

I wonder which sites Barracuda network blocks :)

I can second this. It took a few months before the company blocked Facebook, whereas anything myspace related is totally blocked. I think it even crashes my computer, I guess they are trying to send a message. =).
