Usually when a popular Web service goes down, we get a flood of emails about it. For example, last month, when 37Signals, Blogger, and LinkedIn all suffered outages within the span of a couple days, we got pinged almost instantly by some of our readers.

That's why today, when I saw a report from Royal Pingdom indicating that Joost has been suffering significant downtime this month, I was a bit surprised I hadn't heard anything about it, from anyone. Here’s a snapshot of the report, indicating more than 5 hours of downtime so far this month:

joost

The Internet television company was certainly one of the most hyped of last year, with $45 million in funding and a reported 1 million plus beta users. But where is it now? According to data from Compete (which tracks US traffic only), not very far along:

joost traffic

Of course, Joost is a downloadable application, so, traffic to the web site isn't the only metric to look at when analyzing the company's performance. Nonetheless, Joost certainly doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire, and the fact we've heard nothing about the downtime says quite a bit anecdotally. You may recall that Joost also fired their CTO last month.

On the other hand, maybe you’re using Joost like mad and just aren’t telling anyone :) So, quick reader poll:

How often do you use Joost?

@Troy Joost has always supported Macs. Joost stopped being relevant when they added a badminton channel. Even extra helpings of Star Trek can't fix that mess. The content is now mostly crappy music videos, cars, and bikini girls. Hardly the ipTV of the future.

I actually haven't noticed the downtime. Guess I don't use the service enough... www.TalkPrice.net
