Google Shares Pass Another (Mostly) Meaningless Milestone: $700 - Rmail
Posted by elveston priory at 5:11 pmShares of Google passed the $700 per share mark for the first time this morning. In reality, this number doesn’t mean much since Google has vowed to never split their stock (so much for all that IPO talk about letting average investors participate in the company’s growth), other than a few more billion dollars in market value the company can leverage to keep fueling its acquisition frenzy. Google’s stock gets a lot of hype in the press because of its high retail price, but actually, Amazon has performed much better over the past 52 weeks, up 131% versus the 45% gain posted by Google.
Nonetheless, Google has been on a sharp climb recently, as it passed the $600 mark just three weeks ago. With major news products like “GPhone” and OpenSocial on the way, it’s clear that investors are enthusiastic about the company’s plans to make money in areas beyond search.
Disclosure: I own a whopping 5 shares of Google
To further introduce myself, I’m announcing that I will be throwing the first NYC “Mash Meet” on the evening of November 8th. Mashable’s chief editor Adam Ostrow will be in attendance as well.
The informal event will be hosted at Village Pourhouse, 64 Third Avenue, NYC, between the hours of 7:00 - 9:00 PM. I’ve put together some great drink specials, so I expect to see everyone in the area there.
We’re accepting three small sponsors for the event: you’ll get a mention on all promotional materials and on our coverage here at Mashable. If you’re interested, please contact me.
In addition, the Mash Meet falls on the eve of the last day of the ad:tech Interactive Marketing Conference NY. I will be in attendance throughout and you’ll probably be able to find me in the “Media and Branding” or “Emerging Platforms” track events. So, if you’re heading to ad:tech see you there! If not, let’s share a pint at Pourhouse!

LendingClub, the peer-to-peer lending service that took off on Facebook and recently announced its plans to expand, is doing so with partnerships with 10 alumni associations across the country.
This is set up in a similar manner to how the Facebook app worked, enabling alumni to lend and borrow money from each other. In establishing these new lending tools, LendingClub has set up co-branded communities with several alumni associations including Georgia Tech, Kansas Sate and my own alma mater, University of Michigan.
This is a unique method of expansion for LendingClub, which announced a round of funding for $10.26 million in August. What it’s doing is offering custom communities for existing organizations, which automatically harbors a level of trust tat would otherwise be absent.
Just like visiting the classifieds site set up for your college, you know that you’re more likely to deal with people that are trustworthy than going to a third-party classifieds site. Dealing with these LendingClub communities isn’t exactly like the classifieds example, because after college we all have a tendency to disperse, so it’s not as if you can drive across campus to pick up the new futon you bought from a Senior. But you get the point.
This route for expansion plays nicely with its initial tactic on Facebook. Growth in the peer- and micro-lending spaces has continued even in the past week, with eBay’s MicroPlace and Zopa’s new Listings section.
User comment: By: RexDixon@Street Attack - well we hope that it will carry over well.

It’s Halloween, and technology news is scarce. Logos redecorated in Halloween style abound, and perhaps it’s just me, but they mostly seem ugly as hell.
I mean, look at this. Google has had some really cute/cool logos in the past, but this one is downright fugly. OK, I get it, the letters are ghosts. However, only “L” actually resembles one; the others look like, well, poorly drawn letters (and moldy, in case of “G”). I admit that it takes creativity to personify each letter into something meaningful, but this is really a sad, sad attempt.
YouTube won’t win any awards with that genetically engineered pumpkin, too. It’s not even carved out, losers!
Yahoo actually has quite a cool logo. Pixel graphic style, cute and spooky, and there’s even an animated family of undeads and ghosts scuttling through the scenery every now and then. Well done, Yahoo: Google may be owning you in every other sphere of interest, but when it comes to cute logos, you’re the king!
I did not expect this, but Ask.com’s take on Halloween actually scared me. Well, not in the “I dropped off my chair” kind of way, but those pumpkins are huge, man! Kudos to Ask for taking the Halloween theme so seriously.
On the other hand, AOL is being too shy with a miniature pumpkin. Don’t want to scare those young visitors, huh?
Technorati’s take on Halloween is boring as expected: a plain, vanilla-style pumpkin replacing the “O”. It gets points for looking evil, though.
The result could have been worse, though; it could have been this:
Photoshop skills ftw.
Just for the record, all of the above at least get points for trying; MySpace and Facebook still look their boring selves, just like any other day. Yawn!
If you know of any other cool, funny or just plain awful Halloween logos, feel free to add more in the comments!

User comment: By: Street AttackThe ask logo was impressive...to bad it's on ask. The square pumpkin is about as crapy as the content up on the site. MP wizard brings to mind what a five year old might make in paint. I have to say that I appreciate the Google logo for the van gogh esq quality...or does the winning logo have to be a cliche Halloween icon like you seem to perfer.
